Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (TV Movie 2018) Poster

Ted Neeley fan

I'm a professional musician, and JCS is my favorite musical. I've seen it twice alive with Ted Neeley. I thought the overall production was practiced. I liked the ensemble and excitement of the alive televised prove. For me, Dixon was the stand out and really made the show worth watching. I liked Bareilles and thought Alice Cooper was a cool selection for Herod. I think John Legend has a beautiful voice, and there'southward a sweet to him.... simply I don't call up he was the right choice for this role. I would've liked a stronger presence for the function of Jesus. He seemed near uncomfortable, while the remainder of the major roles were filled past people who really owned them. I appreciated seeing this on television set, fifty-fifty with all the commercials...

Very disappointing

John Fable tin can sing but he does non know how to emote to convince u.s. that he means what he'south saying. Darn shame. The theater people who have atomic number 82 roles (especially Judas and Caiaphas) are fantabulous and then are the musicians. The staging is awkward and not very creative.

My biggest gripe for the producers is the fact that they did not credit the wonderful ensemble on IMDb. They deserve their credits!

Allow's confront facts

It'southward awesome to meet large budget classics like this just YOU CANT HEAR THE SINGERS AT ALL! The instruments and crowd noise does more than deadening the performances, information technology OBLITERATES them. Go heed to Ian Gillian's gut wrenching gethesimine and compare to the soulless John legend who I don't call back could scream in hurting if he was on fire. Someone should have explained to him that songs similar the temple, he was ENRAGED and SADDENED. Information technology's terrible to say but some of the groundwork lepers would have been a better jesus. That being said, the balance of the cast was OUTSTANDING and really brought life and never before expected talent to a story for a whole new generation to honey. Oh, and way way too many commercials!

John Fable not great

I'm lamentable but the funny faces John Legend makes trying to sing clean, has lack of acting skills and his not and so strong and raspy voice ruined this production for me.

Well done but NBC screwed the pooch

Dear execs at NBC

I love your idea of presenting live Broadway shows. Simply information technology really ruins the moment when a deplorable vocal like "I don't know how to dearest him" is followed by a PCS commercial and a KFC commercial and commercial after commercial after commercial. If you are going to do go along doing things like this, and I hope you exercise, they need to be done with limited commercial interruptions. The overrun of commercials but kills this for me.

Well, that's not truly fair. The hyped up crowd is taking away from the show as well. They really need to take information technology down a level or four. Perhaps a Prozac placed on each seat when they walk in? Otherwise, the cast is very proficient, as expected, and I enjoy the staging. Simply I am furious at NBC for all the commercials. You can't treat a live performance of a Broadway Musical like your other shows.

2020 edit - NBC has had two years to listen to the complaints, and while they take the power to reduce the number of commercials, which ruins the flow, they instead decided to re-air and if anything they increased the number of commercial breaks. Please, NBC, no more airing of live Broadway musicals. Y'all obviously don't have a inkling how to do them.

Commercials better than John Legend!

John can sing but has i facial expression that made me begging for a commerrcial break! It felt awkward and dull during his parts. I loved the rest of the bandage although Sarah was the highlight for me. She made me forget information technology was on tv, gave me chills!

Great performances

I thought the choreography and setting were splendid. The musical performances were stellar.

My only complaint are the advertisements. They wreck the period of the show.

Sorry - Jesus and Judas needed much stronger voices

The audio mixing was off - the band overshadowed the voices in the beginning few acts - merely that was non really the trouble. While I love John Fable, his voice does not have the range or strength to come close to what was needed for that job. Mary (Sara B) and The King(Alice Cooper) were awesome, as were some of the bottom roles. Some of the lesser cast had much improve voices than Mr. Legend for the job. the band was cracking and the stage and sets were well worth the view. But during the commercials I was listening to the erstwhile 1973 version and there was not comparison.....sorry. But I am glad that this generation gets to see the play. It has a great meaning and passion.

Not quite right

Warning: Spoilers

JC Superstar is undoubtedly my favourite musical. I accept watched the movie countless times, listened to the original recording countless times, and I've attended 4 live performances of it. I know this stone opera inside and out. I was very hopeful that this version would accident me abroad. Only information technology only never did.

I'll get to my thespian critiques in a moment. First, a couple of production notes. 1 - I idea a few choices the directors made were interesting. Having Annas be the one who says "Someone Christ, Rex of the Jews" to Pilate was very baroque. That is intended to be one of the guards who clearly had never heard of him before! 2 - A few lyric changes defenseless me off guard, only I have no objection to them trying to modernize the words a chip to fit a mod day audience. iii - I do realize that a phase production is sometimes limiting, but for Jesus to only throw ONE CHAIR during the temple scene made it completely underwhelming and almost laughable, which it should never exist. 4 - I suppose that the falling ladder was sufficient to become the signal across for Judas' suicide, simply all the stage adaptations I've seen before managed to actually give united states a visual of Judas hanging. I do not know how they did information technology, only they did! This i needs more here. 5 - And lastly, in terms of criticisms, I thought the 39 lashes scene really missed an opportunity. Watching what happened on stage never explained why Jesus' back was all cutting up from being whipped 39 times. you

There were a few practiced points besides! ane - the crucifixion scene was quite moving and actually put a new spin on that which I thought was neat. 2 - Nearly of the costumes were bang-up, peculiarly the priests. Possibly not Jesus', but the residue were on signal. iii - I've seen some people complain that he music was "likewise loud" or "drowned out the singing" at times. I really disagree. The music was played fantastically throughout. I could take done without the mosh pit in front of the phase, which did occasionally distract from the acting, but I understood it. Again, a new twist which generally speaking, worked as intended.

John Legend is a great singer. He was not a good choice for Jesus though. He completely wimped out on ane of Jesus' best moments during Gethsemane. His range is just not right for this office. Also, his body movements every bit he strained to striking some notes and his disability to actually show Jesus' emotions were distractions. Jesus' part in this opera is almost more about interim than singing, although it is a challenging song range that is needed at times as well. Legend simply doesn't have the acting chops for it, and I was surprised that he didn't seem to possess the song chops either.

Brandon Victor Dixon was a phenomenal Judas. By far the best function of the unabridged bear witness. I knew nothing nearly him earlier watching this operation, but I cannot wait to see more of him now. He was the highlight of the entire production.

I idea having Alice Cooper perform every bit King Herod was a great option from a marketing standpoint, but he never really seemed to buy into the function as such. I saw some other review suggesting David Lee Roth would take been a meliorate choice - I remember that would have been amazing!

Norm Lewis always seemed to be trying besides hard likewise go on his voice as deep every bit he could. It is vital to that role, for sure. Only HD cameras did non assist him hibernate that it was a strain for him. That part needs to exist menacing! He never managed to scare me.

No 1 else stood out to me. Everyone else was adequate but not bang-up in their roles. I call back there must have been much ameliorate choices for Mary than Sara Bareilles, but she did ok. Erik Gronwall fabricated the near of his big moment, but I thought he was merely ok also. Ben Daniels really did quite well equally Pilate. It was as well bad that his final annotation of the production was missed, though. But it is a hard matter for whatever singer, and then I can't say that it took away from his performance as a whole. Lastly, in terms of actors worth mentioning, Jin Ha was only fine as Annas- non fantastic, but not poor.

Thank you for reading!!

Better than I expected

I figured network idiot box would mess this upwards equally they usually exercise, but I'chiliad pleasantly surprised. I am a HUGE fan of the '73 version, and know all the words past middle, from listening to the soundtrack over and over, more than times than I can count. I beloved this musical-always take. I'm but part-way into it, merely I'm enjoying watching and singing along.

Aye, the commercials are annoying, and the audience is loud, simply the performances on the whole are impressive. Brandon Dixon is great as Judas, and very nice to expect at. Lolololol. The '73 version volition always be my favorite, but this is ok. Planning to stay up past my bedtime to watch the whole thing.

Commercials and Audience almost ruin this show.

Warning: Spoilers

Never a large Andrew Lloyd Webber or "JCS" fan, just I have to admit that I liked this production more than I thought I would.

That being said, I'm glad I DVR'd the show. I watched information technology over the grade of Monday and Tuesday, and I'm glad I did. With all of the abrasive commercial breaks, long commercial breaks, in that location was no style I would take watched information technology straight thru.

In addition, someone, I guess to create atmosphere, decided to mic the audition. This was to give the impression that the crowd was having a wild time and that this was not simply a show, but an feel that had to be shared. Merely what information technology did was ruin most of the moments and performances of some very talented actors. It will definitely brand me think twice before watching some other production.

I found all of the people involved to exist very talented and excellent in their roles. Aye, John Legend was probably the weakest actor on the stage, only I give him credit for attempting to act/sing a function that is incredibly difficult.

All in all, an excellent product ruined past the greed of networks and the phoniness of the sound producers.

Looked Lip Synched

I was hoping for so much more than... I love the original motion-picture show, where in that location was truthful emotion and interim. Equally many have said already, the crowd and musicians were too loud to hear the leads well. The balance was off. NBC should have been more like PBS with this and run the sponsors at the beginning and end. Besides many interruptions breaks the continuity and touch on. It's odd to me that the sound was so off, and notwithstanding the lips didn't synchronize with the voices much of the time. Nearly of the players are not actors, notably John Legend, who I love as a vocalist. Simply his acting needs work. All that said, Brandon Victor Dixon was great! He was the circuitous character of Judas. Hope to see him do more! Sara Bareilles was good, And Alice Cooper as Herod was fine comic relief. I don't know Ben Daniels' work, only he is obviously an actor. He showed the conflict of his character, different Mr. Fable. The catastrophe sequence was good, but the production lost its power due to the commercials. NBC, I love that you want to bring theater to television, but with something similar this, you really need to modify the business model.

Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic!!!!

I'll be honest I'm a musical theater geek and I accept been very disappointed with the latest shows like hairspray and a Christmas story, but this has been amazing! NBC actually hit the jackpot with this i! John legend puts his own spin on Jesus and Brandon Victor Dixon is a phenomenal performer as Judas and blew me away. I hope FOX and CBS and ABC take note from nbc and put on phenomenal performances like this one!

Worst version I have ever seen

Music was weak. Costumes were terrible ( I idea I was watching Star Wars or DC Comics.). I have to concede i matter: Since this was a live production it must take been hard to come back with energy after each group of commercials. The music (instrumentals) were OK for the kickoff half hour then they degenerated into free-for-all jambs. The singers tried to put their ain twist on the music and ruined Andrew-Lloyd Weber's music. I don't think the singers knew the meaning backside what they sang, and it showed. The best version was the original cast and second all-time the 1973 Motion picture. Notwithstanding, I'1000 sure almost people that watched this trash were not fifty-fifty alive so and do not know what good music sounds like.

The screaming audition covered the flow

Practically everyone has seen a version of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - from the original 1970 Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice opera that was a Broadway hit and became a picture in 1973. Now that rock ops has been transformed into a alive concert version for tv set and the results are a mixed pocketbook of both good and bad. Free energy to burn, this production is more about noise than it is about drama and music and the chief reason for that is the constant explosive screams and adulation grade the on stage audience seated in bleachers to the side of the actors.

Lots of shaved and tattooed heads and wild hair on the huge cast, just some of them stand out due west=for their performances. Sara Bareilles is first-class equally Mary Magdalene, Brandon Victor Dixon is a credible and well-vocalized Judas, Norm Lewis has the finest bass voice as Caiaphas, and John Legend struggles with the office of Jesus - vocally fine by not a credible character. For some reason the directors enlisted Alice Cooper to enact Herod (so much screaming from the on phase audition to really hear him), and a meandering orchestra in costume (strings are not aural for the noise).

Information technology is an event and worth sitting through if only to appreciate a landmark piece of work approaching its fiftieth anniversary. Best with volume turned downward - non for the bandage but for the out of control onstage audience.

Meh. Rent the Norman Jewison masterpiece instead.

John Legend doesn't take the voice or talent to play the lead and the same for the player that played Judas. The remainder is FB the bandage was fair only this product really missed the marking. Regardless of the imitation audience over-reactions.The performances seemed uncomfortable and forced. And if you lot've seen Ted Neeley as Jesus and the hugely talented Carl Anderson equally Judas Iscariot, a deadening pop star and an unappealing actor picked solely because he was in Hamilton, but won't do. Besides bad the most talented actors and singers are no longer bandage in productions like this. This is a great musical and it deserved much better and then do nosotros.

Who Is Brandon Victor Dixon?

I've only seen this once, many years ago. The overall product value was wonderful. It's a good show. I thought John Fable's range was incredible, one of the most creative singers on the planet. Sarah Bereilles had the Mary Magdalene role on ice. And the guy who played Judas, Brandon Victor Dixon stole the prove. That said, I know that everyone is complaining about the commercials. I take to as well. There were times when I forgot what had just happened during these breaks. It pretty much ruined it for me. How can a person get involved in something similar this when every five minutes you break for KFC. I too had issue with some of the sound, only I can forgive that because all the glitches can't exist cured in a live performance.

SuperStar Viewing

I am a big fan of the 1973 picture show version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I was skeptical nigh this production. I was however looking forward to seeing it. I can tell you now, I am so glad I didn't miss it. It is now one of my favorite adaptations. All the players were fantastic. I could not picture show a fav. Information technology was cast and then well and staged beautifully. I cried big fourth dimension during a lot of the numbers, I am so happy someone had the idea to practice this.
